3 Ways to Prepare Your Boiler for This Winter
Boilers aren’t as common as they used to be, but some older Albuquerque buildings and homes still have them. If you do have a boiler to heat your home or commercial building, there are some things you need to do to get it ready for the winter heating season. Here are three of the most common preparation tips.
Turn it on early
The first step you need to take to prepare your boiler for winter is to turn it on well before the first cold day and make sure it is working properly. The boiler unit should kick on in a reasonable amount of time and it should be producing warm air. If your boiler takes a long time to turn on or isn’t putting out warm air, you should call a technician to schedule a service visit.
Bleed the radiators
Bleeding your boiler’s radiator system before the winter heating season begins is vital to ensure it operates at top efficiency. Bleeding the air out of the radiators gives them top capacity to move warm air. There should be a valve on your radiator that makes the process of bleeding the system easy. A telltale sign that your radiator needs to be bled is if it is hot at the and cooler at the top.
Insulate pipes
If you have a condensing boiler, you have a pipe that takes care of the water that builds up from the boiler’s operation. This pipe may lead into a floor drain or it may lead directly outside. If it leads outside, there is a danger that it could freeze in extremely low temperatures, which could cause the pipe to get blocked and allow condensation to build up in your boiler system, which can reduce it’s efficiency and, in a worst-case scenario, cause your boiler to fail. You need to make sure this pipe is adequately insulated to prevent it from freezing. If you can’t do that, you should see about getting it routed inside to a floor drain.
Preparing your Albuquerque boiler for the winter by using these and other tips will ensure you have a stress- and problem-free heating season.
